Maya and Softimage have a heavier presense in the movie industry. There are movies that use Max (Driven - the 3D was done exclusively in Max as far as i know), but most only use Max for doing storyboards or roughs of the action scenes. However, Max isn't used much in the movie industry, at least not for the actual 3D work. (Mental Ray, which i think might be overkill, though.

Recent releases have gotten much better, with a good hair/fur plugin added, much better poly-modelling tools (i hear you don't even need Meshtools anymore, though it's free so it doesn't matter) and a severely improved standard renderer. Max is decent for modelling, very good for animation, and has a TON of plugins that make it do almost anything well - if you have the budget. Maya is better in that respect, and though i haven't played much with it, it seems the learning curve is less steep.īut it really comes down to WHAT you want to do. It's gotten better, but there are still some wierd decisions. Unfortunately i've worked pretty much in Max, so i'm accustomed to how they do things. Some things are just back-ass-wards and only logical once you get into the Max mindset. I wouldn't exactly call Max' userinterface userfriendly.

Lightwave3d Has done some nice things recently, but I would go with Max for early learning or just bite the bullet and get MayaPLE (free to learn, but rendering has a watermark) and the "Learning Maya" book from Alias.Īnd while I have not personally used 3dsmax, I have seen a fairfew demos on it, and talked about it with my uncle (an animator) and it sounds that if you want a combination of a really great app, with a decent user interface 3dsmax is the way to go. It misses a number of key features to make it a good learning tool for progression to high end 3d animation.

Max is the defacto standard for the 3d gaming industry, and has even been making inroads into the film industry over the last few years.īlender is also a nice package if you just want to do video game type stuff. This program is fairly easy to pick up and will allow you to develop the skills to take your animation to a higher lever in Max or move on to Maya or Softimage (what most movie studios use). If you want to start learning 3d with the goal of moving in a direction of production of some actual quality animations your best bet with the easiest learning curve is 3D studio max.

If you're interested in this as something beyond hobby, Maya is ideal to focus on, it seems to have the biggest share of the jobs. In the end, I think you should just bite the bullet and go ahead and try the trial versions of one of the big 3. If you're a student, they have a *kickass* academic price.

I even got to use it on an amiga *shudder*. It's what I eventually learned to be slightly competant in, thanks to a friend of a friend who worked at newtek while they were still in KS. Now that you can at least play around (legally) with the big packages, I'm not sure how useful blender is unless you want to actually put together a demo reel and go get work.īesides the already mentioned, let me chime in about lightwave3d. When I tried blender (around version 1.0), I can say I thought it was impressive for it's price, but pretty limiting compared to the big names. I also tried calagari true space, which at the time was dirt cheap but just googling for it now at it's current price I couldn't reccomend it. At least at the time I was fooling around with 3d animation, Animation Master was a very common 'starter' package.
